Ex. 1: The first of the following excerpts is adapted from a 1996 essay about an exhibit of paintings by the Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675); the second is from an autobiography written in 1962.
Ex. 2: This passage is excerpted from a 1996 book about Thomas Jefferson, statesman and third President of the United States.
Ex. 3: This passage, written in 1996, is adapted from a book in which an oceanographer recounts her experiences piloting a deep-sea submersible craft to explore the ocean floor.
Ex. 4: In this passage from a 1997 essay, the author reflects on his 1973 interview with actress/singer Josephine Baker and writer James Baldwin, both Americans who left the United States to live in France.
